How Advancing Technologies Are Affecting Our Young Children And Their Education

As a parent and a college student, I am noticing how the educational system is constantly changing. My children are now in 4th and 6th grade and I notice that the school work that they are doing right now is a lot more advanced than what it was when I was in the same grade. They spend hours doing home work each night. Before, I started back to college; I was often having a hard time trying to help my oldest child with some of his home work, especially math. The same words where not even being used for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

My son is just now in 6th grade and he is already having 7 different classes a day. He has hours of homework each evening and is struggling. As a parent, I am concerned about the fact that he is having such a hard time in school this year. My straight "A" student is now making B's, C's, and even D's. He continues to work hard at all of his subjects, but is still struggling. He has gone from loving school, to now hating it.

I know that technology is advancing at very fast pace and that the teachers and educators are just trying to make sure that our children are prepared for the future. I am concerned that, right now that our children are being pushed to hard and to fast. Yet, common sense tells us that we need to make sure that they are prepared for the future. I am not able to predict what our future is going to be like. I do however know that it is going to be moving at a faster pace, and that technology will continue to grow.

If I could give every new parent one suggestion, it would be to invest in every opportunity you can for your children to start learning at an early age. Make sure and have plenty of educational toys from birth. Start with simple educational toys like strings and beads, counting blocks, etc. But, don't stop there as their ages advance, make sure and get toys that will continue to keep their minds active and increase their learning potential.
